New & Improved

Does it count as changing clothes for today if I just put on a different pair of pajamas?  Even if it was 7pm before that happened??  I did shower in between; so that counts, right???

Okay, so I may have been pretty lazy today, but in all fairness, we kind of desereved a day off.  Us Koehns (like just about everyone else here lately) have been battling with the sicks.  Chan woke with a stomach virus on Wednesday and is still on the tail end of it, and Jus and I both have the crud.  And poor Liam...I don't know how he has any snot left, he's been pouring it out for weeks.  So gross.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to make a quick post here to unveil the new and improved look of Snips & Snails.  When I started the blog a year ago, I just picked a generic Blogger template and have been meaning to go back and make it prettier.  I figured today was as good a day as any, so here it is.  I spent most of the afternoon getting it updated....  Okay, that's a lie.  I found new pretty things to use and watched while Justin painstakingly edited everything and pieced it together for me.  (Good thing I have a nerdy husband who can make these things happen, because I so do not speak HTML.)

Let me know what you think!  I love reading your comments and feedback!  And if you aren't a follower of Snips & Snails, go ahead and jump on the bandwagon for me!  You can follow me on the right hand side over there --------> or you can subscribe by email.

And because I hardly ever post without a picture or two, here is a collage of photos we took on Valentines Day:
So, here is a little quote in honor of the blog's new look.  Adios to the robots!  Thanks to ShabbyBlogs.com for the new look!  And a big kudos to Justin Koehn for doing all the legwork for me!

Love, Love, Love!

It was around this time nine years ago that I was reading the book "The 5 Love Languages" by Gary Chapman.  Justin and I were supposed to read it for part of our pre-marriage counseling class.  I'm gonna be honest here and just tell you that Justin never read the book (though he did watch the accompanying videos with me on VHS....yes, I said VHS).  But, me being the rule-follower that I am, I read every last word of that book.  Go me.

As our post reading assignment we were to choose which of the 5 Love Languages most closely represented how we showed love and how we wished to be shown love.  In case you aren't familiar with the book, the 5 Love Languages according to Dr. Chapman are: 1.) Words of Affirmation, 2.) Acts of Service, 3.) Giving/Receiving Gifts, 4.) Quality Time, and 5.) Physical Touch.

Well, I think you could roll these all into one and then you'd be speaking my love language.  However, when dishing out some love I definitely speak most often in languages 2 and 3...and 4.  Yes friends, I'm multi-lingual!!  I love helping and I love giving gifts!  And spending time with my loves is one of my favorite things ever!

My 3 Favorite Loves :)

Anyhoo, the reason I thought of this was because a while back I found a sort of Valentines Advent for kids on Pinterest.   The particular one I remembered was 14 days long...but I ain't got time for that.  So, I spoke to my kiddos using Love Language #3 for one week prior to Valentines Day.  They loved getting their little treats each day and it was so fun to give them!  We've had fun celebrating LOVE this week!  Thought I would share what we did, though most of it is stolen from Pinterest.  (I'm a thief, but an honest one).

Valentine Treat #1: Reese's Pieces and Kool Aid

The boys enjoying their first surprise

Valentine Treat #2: Bubbles!

He later poured both bottles on my mini-van and smeared around the dirt. "Mommy, I washed your car!"

Yea, he totally rocks

We also had heart pancakes on Saturday morning, but the ones on Pinterest looked a lot better than mine did.

Sweet kiddo at breakfast

And the wee little one, too
Valentine Treat #5: Gummy worms and bouncy balls

It doesn't take much to excite him obviously

My flowers from Jus :)

And his Valentine treat from me
And for Valentine Date Night, I surprised Jus with dinner at McNamara's and tickets to Flogging Molly!  We had an AWESOME time and even stayed out until almost 1:00!  Haven't done that in a while!
While I certainly don't think we should wait until Valentines Day to tell/show others how much we love them, I really have enjoyed showering the gifts on my littles this week in honor of this day.  And I haven't forgotten to tell  and show them either...just in case their love language might not be exactly like their Mommy's.

Why I Love Being a Mommy

Welcome to February!  I decided to take a break from blogging for most of January, but I am ready to get back to it.  It is not my resolution this year, so my posts may or may not be weekly (depending on what we've got going on and how lazy I am).

Since we are now in February, the month of LOVE, I decided to make this week's post about love.  I am fairly certain everyone knows how much I love my boys, so this isn't about the reasons I love them...because I could go on, and on, and on, and on, and on...you get the point.  This blog post is about the reasons I love being a/their Mommy.  It's pretty much the best job ever.  Here are some reasons why I love it so much:

1.  The joy of becoming and being a Mom.  There is no other love like that of a mother.  Even a Daddy's love is different.

Love these little stinkers!

2.  Bedtime.  This may sound odd since bedtime is the part of the day where we put them to sleep and are away from them for 10-12 hours.  But some of the sweetest minutes of motherhood are spent putting our babies to sleep.  Reading them bedtime stories, saying prayers, rocking them, singing to them, laying with them until you finally feel the heavy weight of sleep on them, and then the best part...watching them sleep.  They are so calm, so sweet, so very precious while they are sleeping.

3.  The Tiny Tushie Run to the Tub!  Okay, maybe this is just a mini-Olympic event in our house, whatever.  But very seriously, one of my favorite parts of the day is watching those two naked rears running like crazy to get to the bath.  This won't be fun (or appropriate) for much longer, so I am going to enjoy it while I can.

4.  Buying for & dressing little people.  How much fun is that?! Plus, extra reasons to go shopping.

5. While it can sometimes be a tad bit annoying, I love that my kids (mostly Chandler) are great reminders of how we need to treat others.  He doesn't let us get by with the "Do as I say, not as I do" type of parenting, and I love that.  He actually said to me the other day, "Mommy, you tell me I need to be nice, and that means you need to be nice, too."  Point taken, Chan.

6. Homework time.  I am certain that this is a time that many parents would rather wring their kids' necks, but I love homework time!  Perhaps it is the teacher in me, or maybe it's the fact that I don't have a classroom of kiddos this year...who knows?  But whatever it is, I love seeing learning in action, especially when it's my kid.

7.  Remember the excitement you had before a family vacation when you were little?  Or better yet, the anticipation of Santa arriving on Christmas Eve?  Double that, then multiply by 10.  That's how much better family vacations and exciting holidays are when you are a parent.

8. Napping with Baby Lamb.  Doesn't get much better than that.  Sadly, Chandler has already outgrown his naps, but those used to be glorious, too.

9.  When Daddy gets home.  I love the excitement, the squeals, the sound of running feet across the hardwood when the boys hear Daddy's car in the garage.  To expand on this, I beyond love watching the bond that my boys are creating with their Daddy.  When they play together, have tickle time, or when Daddy shows them how to do something new...love having a bird's eye view of it all.

10.  Speaking of learning something new, watching your kiddo finally figure out how to do something or accomplish something they've been working on is THE BEST!  One of my very faves was when Chan learned how to swim underwater all by himself.  I will never forget the look on his face or the pride in his voice when he exclaimed, "Mommy, I did it!  I swimmed!"  Oh.My.Goodness.  That's good stuff!

11.  Sometimes it is just the little things, you know?  One of the little things I love is the sounds that come along with having children in the house; the cartoons playing in the background, our favorite lullaby CD playing at bedtime, the sound of Lincoln Logs stacking together as the big kid builds, baby feet slapping the hardwood floor, belly laughs, listening to the out-loud imaginary play, and sometimes I even love the sound of a good mess being made.

12.  Playing with toys, making forts, building sandcastles, having impromptu games of tag, dance parties in the kitchen while making dinner, staying outside until dark in the summer, reading my favorite books to the boys (with hopes that they'll become their favorites, too)...I definitely love all that stuff.  It's almost like being a kid again myself.

13.  Swapping mommy stories with my friends.  I sure do love to tell about my babies, but I also love hearing mommy experiences from my friends.  (This is best done over coffee while the kids play.)

14.  I love that my hugs, kisses, and TLC can often stop tears, calm fears, and melt away pain.  That's good medicine right there.

15.  One of my very favorite parts of being a Mommy is watching my boys be brothers together.  From the minute when our 3 1/2 year old Chan met his just born brother and told us "I don't believe it!  Look at his tiny little fingers!" it has been one of my favorites of being a Mom.  Watching them play, seeing big brother comfort his crying little brother, getting to see Liam walk up to Chan at random times of the day and just give him a hug and lay his head on big bro's shoulder, and even here lately when Liam says "I want NaNew" while Chan is at school, which lets me know how much he misses him when he's gone.  I love these moments.  They are creating their very own brotherhood, and as Mommy, I get to watch.  It's pretty spectacular.

but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories."

We Are Family

So, this week has been a little hectic and I am just now getting to my blog post. Yikes!!  Not having to work on Monday for President's Day really threw off my week.  But, since we were off we did get to spend some long-overdue, quality time with my sister and her oh-so-sweet girlies.  I sure do love my nieces, and they are pretty much the most adorable little girls on the planet.  Adorable runs in our family.  If you don't believe me, just take a look:

Riley Grace, Gracyn Jaymes, & Katelyn MaKenzie
See?  I told ya.  Beautiful girls with matching beautiful personalities.  I.Love.Them.

Anyhoo, because most of our littles are now in school and involved in extracurriculars, we don't get to see each other as often as we used to.  So it was nice to be able to spend some time letting the kids play and catch up on Monday.  I am so super glad that Chandler and Liam have cousins growing up right along with them.  Built-in friends.  I never had cousins growing up (at least not any first cousins), so I am really enjoying watching the relationships that our children are building with one another.

Katelyn, the oldest of the cousins, is like the little mother hen.  And true to form being the oldest (and dare I say a bit like her mother??), she has a take charge kind of attitude.  Riley, second oldest, is one spunky little gal.  She is a fireball for sure!  And always good for a laugh!  She and Chan are only six months apart, so they have literally grown up together.  Their squabbles have recently begun to resemble those of brother/sister rather than that of cousins.  Gracyn, until recently, was the baby.  And she knew it, too.  Those big brown eyes and precious grin will melt hearts and make you hand over whatever it is she desires.  We will see how she deals with Liam taking over her spot soon,  but so far she hasn't seemed to mind. :)

I can't wait to see what the future holds for all these little loves of ours.  I hope and pray that the bonds that they are making now continue to grow and strengthen in the years to come.

What's LoVE Got to Do With It?

Love is a many splendored thing! Love lifts us up where we belong! All you need is love! Love can build a bridge! LOVE...will keep us togeeeeeeether!

Ah, Valentine's Day. And love is what it's all about.  The the starry-eyed Valentines, the love notes, flowers, chocolates... okay, so I've never been a huge fan of the holiday in the traditional way you might think about it.  (For instance, Justin and I shared an exquisite Taco Bell dinner tonight for Valentine's.) But something about being a mom makes every holiday a bit more fun and exciting.  So, on this, The Day of Love, I wanted to share some of the things about my little loves that warmed my heart this week.

Geez, look at them!  They reek of cuteness!!
Okay, we'll start with Liam since he usually gets stuck in second place:
1. His "Ma-Ma"s are becoming much more dinstinct and intentional this week.  Makes my heart melt!

B. The little stinker turned 9 months old on February 9th and was on the GO!  All that rocking and scooting has finally paid off.  Our "little" one is on the move, and we're in trouble!

3. Not only did he start crawling, but Baby Lamb is now pulling up on anything that will support his 20 lbs. of chunk.  It took the child 8 months to roll over (yes, really...8 months) and now he is reaching milestones like nobody's business.  He is definitely gonna be my laid back kid.

Oh, and look at those eyes....gorgeous!

And now for Chan:
A. I don't get to put Chan to bed as much as I used to since Liam came along.  Bedtime used to be our thing.  Lately, I get 2-3 nights a week and Daddy takes the rest so that I can tend to Liam & chores.  So, Sunday night's unprompted "Mommy, I love you to the moon and back" is definitely a winner this week.

2.  His rendition of Lady Gaga's "On the Edge" this week left me with stomach cramps I was laughing so hard.  We literally laugh at this kid hundreds of times throughout the week, but hearing him sing "I'm on the edge-uh, the edge-uh, the edge-uh, the edge-uh, THE EDGE-UH, THE EDGE-UH!!!" on the way home the other night was hilarious.  SO wish I had caught that one on camera.

C.  Chan has been in to Mario Brothers this week big time.  To the point where he has picked out complete red and green outfits from his wardrobe (right down to the unders) so that he can dress like Mario and Luigi.  Monday Justin picked up the boys from school because I had a doctor's appointment and I'd told Chan that he could play Mario when they got home.  I came home to this, which left me doubled over in laughter:
Not the best shot, but loving the 'stache

There is definitely lots of love in this Mommy's heart, not all of it from these two boys, but from so many other family and friends.  I love you guys and hope that you have had a very sweet and happy Valentine's Day!

To Be or Not To Be???

So, I'm just gonna say it...I'm in a rut.  For the first time in my teaching career, I'm just not sure being a teacher is what I want to do right now.

Don't get me wrong; I love my KinderKids.  And I love teaching.  And I love learning!  And I love everything about being in a school building; the sounds of the kids walking to class, the smell of crayons and glue mixed with the aroma of the ever present coffee supplying caffeine to the teachers, the artwork adorning the walls that varies in degree of ability and semblance.  I love the fact that I get to spend my day teaching, learning, laughing, and (all to often) making a fool of myself with my kiddos in our classroom, while I also get to spend a few minutes each day chatting, planning, laughing, and swapping stories with some of the most fabulous friends and co-workers.  But, I'm in a rut nonetheless.  And here's why:

Yep.  There they are again...the world's two cutest boys.  And one of the reasons for my rut!  (We won't get into the other reason right now, that's a whole 'nother blog post.)  But seriously, look at these kids!  Who wouldn't want to spend every second of every day with these two???  I will always be a full-time mommy, but I've had the itch here lately to just be a full-time mommy.  And having an out-of-the-house,  full-time job on top of it is starting to drain this Momma.  (Okay, who am I kidding??  I think my other teacher friends can vouch for me when I say being a teacher is like having two full-time jobs in itself; that one during the day when we actually teach, and then that one that we have on our "nights, weekends, & summers off" in which we plan, prepare, research, professionally develop ourselves, grade, create, cut, copy, paste, laminate, formulate, call, email, type, clean, shop, organize, re-organize, decorate........)

But, then I get a twinge of Mommy guilt just thinking of it.  Strange, huh?  Guilt that I would consider leaving a full-time job to stay at home with my two kids??  But, yes...because as hard as it is for me to believe, Chandler will be going to kindergarten next year.  (WHAT??!!  How is that even possible??)  And I didn't take off work when he was a baby, so why do I need to do that now?  What would he think???...Or would he enjoy the less stressed, more patient Momma who always has time to share?  Time to help with homework, or volunteer in his classroom, or go on field trips with his class?  Hmmm...

But, then I get a little teacher guilt, too.  Possibly not being available to teach and learn with some up and coming KinderKids??  Perish the thought!  Teaching is part of who I am and something that I've wanted to do since I was five years old!

I'm not sure what it is, but I see a change on my horizon, and I've felt it coming for a while now.  I've thought about it, talked about, and prayed about it, but I just don't know my new direction yet.

I came across this little bit of food for thought this week on Pinterest.  Funny how that happened...
